Much has been written about Army and Jeff Monken’s job there. The Black Knights are well-respected and beating that team is a tough ask. Lo, and behold! Western Kentucky just held that team to a season-low in rushing (137 yards) including 3-11 on third downs. This game was 17-0 at about the 58 minute mark before Army got on the board.
We have been wondering if this WKU defense is for real, and while it is notoriously difficult to gauge games against the service academies, we now have enough games under our belt to say that WKU has a good defense. The Hilltoppers are 4-2, 3-0. They have beaten last year’s champ and just need a little more from the offense to feel confident the rest of the way.
Right now Ty Story and the offense muck things up, slow the pace, and grind out yards and points while letting the defense squeeze the life out of the opposition. Against Army, it was the perfect recipe. When they intercepted UAB four times, it was enough to stay ahead of a team with some talent.
Can this team score enough against an FAU team that has found its groove? Can it slow them down enough like they have Army and UAB? Right now, WKU is playing with confidence and a team like that can do a lot of special things.
