Whatever side you rooted for in this game, you can find some positives, some disrespect, something to complain about. The only side that came out with a win was the home squad.
UAB can rightly blame some of the poor refereeing for the outcome, but they cannot control the uneven quality of the rules enforcement that is the CUSA refs. Everyone knows that there will be a decision or two that will go against you. This is how it works. It is not a surprise.
We can understand the frustration and the righteous indignation, but those outbursts and complaints are more useful in the off-season when these things can be planned, refs can be trained, hired, or fired.
All that is to say that while UAB did not get a great review on that OT touchdown that was ruled a fumble, they helped lose the game long before that by being ineffective.
Yes, we can credit Louisiana Tech, but this isn’t the Ruston press department. We can acknowledge the good fortune they were bestowed. It is allowed.
We can acknowledge that Tech is a bad team in an awful division, in a wreck of a league in 2020. It is a testament to the staff and program-building done in Ruston that they battled through and took full advantage of the mistakes made by the visiting team here.
It is a sign that we can expect a few more battles for this division in the coming seasons as long as the current staffs remain in place. Hopefully, it will be between better teams and officiated by more competent crews.
Elsewhere in the league
FAU 24 UTSA 3
Thorough win by Taggert’s men. UTSA looked poor on the road.
Rice 30 Southern Miss 6
Rice dominated a team on its second interim coach — and perhaps its third coach after the first two quit.
BYU 41 WKU 10
Not much to say as one of the nation’s best destroyed one of the league’s worst.
Duke 53 Charlotte 19
Same here, except for Charlotte being an up-and-comer. Just not ready to compete with this team, on this day.
Postponed:
- North Texas @ UTEP
- Marshall @ FIU

Next week’s most interesting matchups: UTSA at Rice, and Tech at North Texas. Rice has played hungrily in their first two games and probably wins that game vs Middle if they get a bit if field goal luck. They destroyed USM — an awful team right now — and play a UTSA game that is not as good as their record indicates at home.
Tech gave away a big lead to UTSA a week ago. They clawed back against UAB. Now they take on the most explosive offense in the league (and the worst defense).
Both games have big West division implications.
