Update: LaTech Report found that the New Orleans Bowl has La Tech is listed as the opponent and it looks like Georgia Southern will be the opponent.
Brett McMurphy is super-connected and has tweeted a bunch of sourced bowl announcements.
- North Texas to Myrtle Beach Bowl to play Appalachian State
- UTSA vs SMU in the Frisco Bowl (this was announced publicly today)
- FAU to the Montgomery Bowl
- WKU vs Georgia State in the Lending Tree Bowl.
Let us review these notices in the order that I received them:
NT vs Appalachian State
We saw Charlotte and Marshall take on App State and the league go 1-1 in the league. This is not the strongest App State team in recent memory but they are still good. The last time North Texas faced a Sun Belt team in a bowl game was in the New Orleans Bowl when Troy blew out the Mean Green in Mason Fine’s 2nd season.
The game will take place December 21st at Brooks Stadium at the home of Coastal Carolina. App State plays here every other season. The bowl was announced in 2018 and this is the inaugural game.
FAU to face Memphis in the Montgomery Bowl
Memphis had previously been announced as one entrant into this bowl game. FAU was just announced as the opponent. This game takes place on December 23rd at 6pm and you might confuse it with the Camelia Bowl, which takes place two days later on Christmas Day. This is a one-year only substitute for the postponed Fenway Bowl so this is likely the only one that is going to be played, ever.
WKU vs Georgia State in the Lending Tree Bowl
The former Mobile Alabama/GMAC/GoDaddy/Dollar General Bowl is now the LendingTree Bowl. It matches Sunbelt and MAC squads. It has featured some current CUSA squads in it previously. It will be December 26th, at 2:30pm at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
WKU has struggled this season but so has Georgia State. The difference is that GSU has two ranked teams in its league.
UTSA vs SMU in the Fort Worth Bowl
UTSA very nearly won the west division and SMU finished 7-3. Both beat Texas State and UNT (in blowouts) this season. The Roadrunners are in their second bowl game (New Mexico Bowl in 2016 – -a loss).
The Frisco Bowl will be held December 19th at Toyota Stadium. If you have ever been to an FC Dallas game then you know where this is. This is the second Frisco Bowl for the Mustangs — the first was in 2017 (inaugural season) where La Tech destroyed them 51-10.
