Lousiana Tech Opener vs Baylor Postponed Because of COVID Outbreak

Cory Diaz of the Monroe-News Star writes that Tech vs Baylor is postponed because of 38 cases of COVID on the Tech squad. The Tech athletic site has a statement from the program announcing the decision, and quotes from both Baylor athletic director Mach B. Rhoads and Tech AD Tommy McClelland.

One concern about Hurrican Laura during the pandemic, were the strains on the social distancing protocols the Louisiana communities had in place. According to McClelland, that seems to have been the root cause for the outbreak.

“It is obvious that the impact of Hurricane Laura in our community a few weeks ago really sparked our significant increase in numbers. With 95 percent of our city losing power for days – even up to a week in many areas – our student-athletes were forced to find places to stay and some even had family from south Louisiana that came northward to stay with them. So many things that we were able to control for the month of August became out of our control, and I think the numbers prove that it took its toll.

“The days leading up to this outbreak, we had a stretch of three weeks with only one positive case. So the protocols we had in place were working prior to Hurricane Laura.”

Rice still hasn’t practiced while Southern Miss has already made a coaching change. Old Dominion is sitting this year out, and FIU will start play on the 26th of this month — maybe. This was already going to be a strange season, and it may not even complete. Oklahoma State and Tulsa had also postponed play this weekend because of hurricane-related issues.

The Big Ten and Pac 12 are currently postponed indefinitely, but are discussing a new timeline.
