Brief Men’s Basketball Preview: 1.15.21

Time is of the essence and here at CUSA right now, we have precious little time.

Let us go through the league this for this Friday’s games.

ODU at Rice 2pm central

We have ourselves a matchup of a solid defensive team against the league’s breakout team. Rice is the new UTSA, in that they have a couple of guys who can fill up the stat sheet and make it interesting. The clash of styles should tell us something about both: can Rice score against a good defense? Can ODU score enough to win?

Marshall at WKU 4pm central

Marshall had a week off (Covid!) and WKU split against Tech at home. Here is a make-or-break game. If these two split here, it would not be a surprise but if one of these squads wins both? Well that would be very impressive. Kinsey vs Bassey, is an easy build up but there is a lot of talent throughout this game.

UAB at Charlotte 4pm central

Another good matchup in this one, as UAB gets a real challenge. Or do they? Well I suppose you could say that because Charlotte is playing good competition they will play well. This has been their trouble — they lost to a bad team last week in non-conference play — and until they prove otherwise they will be looked at with a sneering side-eye.

UTSA at La Tech 6:30pm central

The formidable gym that apparently only UTSA has good fortune in (and Marshall, and UNT … ). UTSA played their best game to pull away in the final minute vs NT. Expect Jhivvan Jackson/Keaton Wallace to be the focus of the defense and for Tech to feast inside. UTSA’s Germany is a solid player, but Tech has some big boys themselves. With more skill.

MTSU at USM 7pm central

Middle split last week and faces a tough, athletic Southern Miss squad that is looking to put a complete game together for the first time. I think we see USM get at least one impressive win this weekend.

UTEP at NT 7pm central

North Texas is upset they blew the game against UTSA. NT has a nice defense but needs more from last year’s POY Javion Hamlet. The Miners have three guys (Williams, Soum, Bieniemy) with loads of scoring talent but they have not played a good team game. This is a test for both squads with designs on the big prize.
