Over in Birmingham, the Blazers opened their campaign with a too-easy win over Savannah State.
It is quite easy to read too much into wins over FCS schools, but remember this time last year Coastal Carolina — a new FBS squad — gave Bill Clark’s team some trouble. The final tally was 52-0.
AJ Erdely had 228 and only misfired on six passes (one was a pick) while throwing for 228. Most of those went to Collin Lisa, who grabbed 10 for 93 and a score. Everything was easy and anyone could have had a career game. The Blazers settled for efficient destruction.
Speaking of Coastal Carolina, they are up next week on ESPN+. The Blazers will have less room for improvement but a win is on the ledger and there were no injuries.
Given the result and the situation, this was just about a perfect day.
