2019 CUSA Football Week 4 Preview

We have two league games this week — FIU and Tech already played one — and the UTSA vs NT game later. There are few games expected to be close in this one, but the last two CFB Playoff finalists are on the schedule.

The Games

All times central

Southern Miss @ Alabama – 11am ESPN2

The Golden Eagles are one of the two hottest teams in the league right now. They scored all over Troy and had two wideouts — Quez Watkins and Jaylon Adams — go over 100. Unfortunately they go up against the machine that is the Crimson Tide. Is an upset in the cards? Nah, not really. The Tide are 38 point favorites.

South Alabama @ UAB — 2:30 NFL Network

UAB had a week off to chill and reveal the new stadium. The big worry is about the type of field — grass or turf. That is no worry at all. South Alabama is a solid enough Sun Belt squad but UAB are 11.5 point favorites.

Wagner @ FAU 5pm ESPN+

FAU has a tune up game for the offense this week. There is not much beyond that to say. Owls are 38 point favorites as well.

Baylor @ Rice 6pm CBSN

Baylor is a monster right now. They ran all over UTSA the last time they played a CUSA team, a group that does not usually allow a ton of rush yards. Rice will get some guys back from injury, but there is little hope here. Baylor are 27-point favorites.

ODU @ Virginia 6pm ESPN2

The Monarchs are in a weird spot. They got a lot of transfers in to shore up the depth chart and nothing has quite gelled so far. They looked good vs Virginia Tech but not against Norfolk St. The oddsmakers do not think too much of their chances here. Virginia are 27 point favorites.

UTSA @ North Texas 6:30pm Stadium on Facebook

Our first rivalry game of the season. Yes it is a rivalry, but no, it is not on the level of others. Both squads come into today’s game 1-2, and looking to start off the divison and conference seasons off on the right foot. Of the two coaches, Frank Wilson has the hotter season but there is a little bit of grumbling in Denton. This is the last chance for Mason Fine to win some team hardware and the performance vs SMU is leaving much to be desired.

Frank Wilson is saying the right things about the game vs Army, but it is a lot of nice words but little in the way of actual performance. North Texas are 18.5 point favorites.

Charlotte @ Clemson 6:30p ACCN

The hottest team in the league visit the defending champions. This will be a blowout in all likelihood, but this Niner team can learn the level of play needed to compete at the very highest level. That kind of thing can raise the level of play for a team that is explosive offensively, and gaining some solidity defensively. Tigers are 41-point favorites

Nevada @ UTEP 7pm ESPN3

UTEP are just 14-point dogs in this one. Nevada are a strange team that beat Purdue, got spanked by Oregon, then struggled against Weber state. There is hope here. As always, UTEP need to figure out their QB situation.
