Preview The CUSA Week

Time is short so let’s get to it:

UTSA at BYU

ESPN2 will broadcast this. UTSA suffered its first loss of the season but it was a moral victory as they did not lose that bad. This, according to some twitter accounts. Depending on your perspective, you can interpret this 3-1 start from UTSA as mostly positive or something neutral. The QB situation is still injury-prone, to put it lightly. BYU destroyed La Tech last week. They are ranked in the top-25 (15) and this will be a test for UTSA. The Runners will probably lose this one but will it mean anything?

MTSU at FIU

The Blue Raiders are an ugly 0-4 to start this season and have dropped two league games. FIU is just 0-1 (v Liberty) and said they had a lot of people out for that one (who doesn’t?). Last year Middle routed FIU with 316 yards rushing in the second half. It was a remarkable performance for both. FIU was expected compete for the title last season and yet underperformed greatly.

FAU at USM

This game was subject to Hurricane. FAU won with a third-quarter explosion of points in a game that Charlotte otherwise dominated. Call it rust or just poor play. Southern Miss has played a quarter of a season by comparison. Scotty Walden for USM got his first win in a 41-31 win in Denton last week. USM can score, but the defense showed some gaps, getting beat over the top by NT’s speedy wideouts. FAU will have to get up-to-speed with Taggart’s offense quickly as this USM team can score.

UTEP vs La Tech

UTEP has more wins (3) than Tech (2) and that is a little strange to say. This game will be on ESPN2 and we should see a more impressive Tech team than the one we saw last week vs BYU. UTEP has been struggling on offense for what seems like the 5th straight year.

Marshall at WKU

This may be the game of the day simply because it involves the best team in the league in Marshall. This is a rivalry game, yes, but WKU is not the team that won back-to-back league titles. Last we saw the Herd they were upsetting App State. Last we saw WKU, they were grinding a 20-17 win over lowly MTSU.

Charlotte vs North Texas

ESPNU will broadcast this one. The Mean Green have a terrible defense, and Charlotte has a fun offense. Last year’s game between these two saw an epic finish and a win by Charlotte. Chris Reynolds and company had a 10-0 lead over FAU through halfway of the third quarter before imploded on both sides of the ball. There should be more open lanes for the 49ers in this one, but the defense will have its hands full with an explosive NT offense. Austin Aune is officially the starting QB for NT. He will throw a wayward ball, but has a cannon of an arm and speedy receivers.
